Sat Dec 31 2005 19:10 PST Some Kind of Chaat: Another recipe from Sumana's mother. I asked her what it was called and she said "snack". Pretty generic name for something I can't find on Google. Anyway, here it is.

• 1 ladle safflower oil
• mustard seed
• 1 spoonful turmeric
• 4 or 5 curry leaves
• raisins, cashews, and peanuts: 2 handfuls total
• 2 T salt
• 2 T white sugar

Fry this all together on low heat. Mix in:

• 2/3 lb. puffed rice. You can also use Rice Krispies.
• 2 t sambar or rassam powder (you can probably use curry powder)

Stir for a while, turning the rice over and over, until all the rice is crispy and turmeric-colored. Store at room temperature.

You can just grab a handful of this and eat it whenever.

Update: Shweta (who got married on Friday) says it's called bhal puri. Also, it's 2006!
