The LDS Church has mailed out a letter to California Bishops asking for financial and personal support of the Marriage Amendment. You can read the letter here. In the past, the Church has organized political action on this issue with the use of its Stake Centers and membership lists.

This is bound to stir up considerable resentment among those who oppose traditional marriage since the LDS church is arguably the third most powerful non-governmental organization in the United States.

I think that even if this does get passed, there will be facial lawsuits and it will eventually be decided by the Supreme Court or by the people through a Federal Constitutional Amendment.

Per the adage "As does California, so does the world." I too think that eventually this will become a federal issue.

Also, did you have a letter read in church last Sunday from the First Presidency? We did, and it was about, of all things, asking people not to look up scriptures during sacrament meeting talks. I wasn't aware that was becoming such an issue to warrant a FP letter.

We did have that letter read.

Louise, however, is in Baltimore right now, and it's a good thing they didn't read the letter in their ward because, according to Louise, they broke every suggestion that's in that letter (asking people to open their scriptures, using visual aids which Louise wasn't even able to see).

She was at a single's ward with a friend though, so go figure: singles wards (not quite as true as your home ward;).
