Looking at the pictures in the paper this morning, I thought, "this must be what it felt like for the Serbian and Belgian refugees when they were fleeing the invading armies." And every other such incident in the history of mankind. Although the circumstances may change, I think the nature of human suffering remains the same. And I can't help wondering how I would react if I were in a similair situation. Would I keep my cool, and be resourceful enough to get myself and my family out? Would I be brave enough to try and help others? It's a terrifying thought.
(9) Fri Sep 02 2005 11:16 PST Red Cross:
Seems like everywhere I turn I am reading about this or that Red Cross. American Red Cross. Belgian Red Cross. Serbian Red Cross.

i think i would be more mad thinking-- other people did this to me. versus-- mother nature just deallt me one. i think what houston is doing and the "sister city" concept is really awesome. im trying to remember who san diego's sister city is...i used to know back when i worked at city hall. los angeles sent firefighters. i was wondering what sd would be doing to help-- but too bad our city is broke. it makes me happy how americans will help each other. i remember when the socal wildfires happened two years ago. help was good. but losing chunks of your neighborhood = awful. to answer your questions:
- yes, free text messages
- red cross is fine. american tragedies are handled differently than intenational ones. namely, the accounting is a lot less suspect. see: http://edition.cnn.com/2005/WEATHER/09/02/katrina.world/index.html they'll get the bulk of donations. if there is something specific you want your money to go to, i recommend doing research. cnn.com or any news source will be listing charities right now. there looked like there were a lot of religious charities especially. im proud of your humanitarian mindedness. =)Posted by Susie at Fri Sep 02 2005 20:32
You are a brave girl, I think you would help others. If I wrote a blog quiz called "What historical war figure are you?" you would be the daring young nurse in the cute uniform, curing people, saving soilders, while writing in your journal faithfully every day for the sake of future young researchers. I probably just described someone you read about in some war, so you can give her a name.

Stacy, I saw that news story too, it's what made me wonder. Here is one about SD: http://www.10news.com/news/4923981/detail.html?subid=22100481&qs=1;bp=t
Susie, there are lots of women like that! Though they didn't all get their journals published, etc, but still. I think I would more likely be an ambulance driver or canteen worker, tho.

There was a link on cnn... I thought you would be interested.
I did as you suggested and found this: http://www.hsus.org/
puppies!!! oh no! Sorry, I know you don't care Stacy, but to me the animals are always the saddest so my meagre funds go to them.Posted by s at Fri Sep 02 2005 22:01
excuse me. i've adopted plenty of manatees and dolphins and acres of the rainforest in my day...i just think that there is something morally offensive about a sea otter raising more money than a family who has just lost their home... though i doubt/hope that the puppies will raise more money than the people..im going to just take solace in the fact that you gave something.

I doubt it too... which is why someone needs to care.

I hope they are at least helping puppies in an area where the people have already been helped.
