We drove up to San Francisco today, visited the museums and then went to dinner in Chinatown at the Golden Dragon restaurant.

We drove up this very street, eventually finding a place to park.

Postcard back:

GATEWAY TO THE ORIENT, erected in 1969, welcomes everyone into San Francisco's Chinatown. In a single step through this entrance an exciting change from Occidental to Oriental - the architecture, the inhabitants, even the faces of the people, are reminiscent of Old China.

Leonard's comments:

It's a magical gateway that exoticizes the Other!
