Roy's Postcards: 1983/11/05

Inscription:

I visited the Smithsonian Institution today. The only exhibit there was on the planning of the Capitol-Mall area, since the remainder of the building is used for administration. Yet the building is an outstanding feature of the Mall.

Postcard back:

The original Smithsonian Institution building, the "red castle on the Mall", was designed by James Renwick and has served as headquarters for the world-wide activities of the Smithsonian since 1849. Originally housing a museum, lecture hall, art gallery, laboratories, offices and living quarters for officials, it has become the administration center of the Institution.

Leonard's comments:

It's only a model.
