[Comments] (12) When Life hands you moldy bread, make dinner: Our Newsweek came today. It's two days late, and isn't stapled together, so it's a looseleaf hodgepodge of colored paper, at best. That's Democrats for ya!

Though right now I rather welcome the liberal bias found therein. On the way home from Califoria last week, I listened to The O'Reilly Factor, Sean Hannity, and Dr. Laura Schlesing-whatever the whole way home, as I am currently fed up with Top 40 Radio, and Susie won't let me listen to country music in my own car.

We went up to see my mum today, as Rachel would say. She sat and talked with us the whole time, took us to Costco, bought us Chinese food (even the yummy shrimp cooked in an unidentified white sauce with walnuts that was amazing), and bought pie for dessert. It was a pleasant surprise. If anyone knows what white sauce I speak of, let me know.

I also got a cool brush from her for my laptop screen. I've been waiting for this to be invented. Today was a great day--two thumbs up. Speaking of thumbs up, tomorrow are the academy awards, and I don't care.

Last night I saw "Hitch", which I really enjoyed - Will Smith can make anything seem believable, even over-the-top melodramatic declarations of love - and before the movie they showed some ad for the Oscars. Oh yeah, they want us to pretend we care! I haven't watched them in years - I used to watch them with my mom, which was nice because it was something I was doing with my mom.

I could tell you about twenty magazines that are way more left than Newsweek. Remember, Newsweek broke the Lewinsky scandal - would the mag have done that if it were a Dem rag?

The Daily Show did this bit recently where a correspondent defined "objectivity" as regurgitating what each side is saying about the issue without telling you whether either side is lying or wrong. J. Bradford Delong, the economist blogger, puts it another way: if the Bush Administration said the earth was flat, the headlines would read "Sources Differ On Shape Of Earth."

I just had an interesting email conversation with Kristen about Bill O'Reilly - she has some opinions she would share with you.

There's good country music, Susie! I just discovered Hank Williams a year ago. It's like the precursor to rock! Give it a chance. For heaven's sake, give Johnny Cash a chance!

John is exadgeratting because I asked him to change the station oncce.

Sumana, you are correct. The Newsweek audience is more liberal than the mag itself sometimes. But my favorite part of the paper are the letters to the editor, because it is always good for a laugh. And those people are staunch liberals.

As for the Oscars, I haven't seen any of the movies up for the awards this year. I may see "The Aviator" one day, however. My brother-in-law and sister saw it, and they were confused. They knew nothing about Howard Hughes beforehand though, so didn't understand the insanity bit at the end.

Now Johnny Cash, that is one great performer.

I watched the Oscars and it was very predictable who would win. Of course the Academy loves Hillary Swank, and no doubt Jamie Foxx would win best actor. I don't even know why some movies were nominated. I mainly just watched it to see what everyone was wearing and who was with who. Yes, right now my life is such that I am interested. At least I didn't have to watch Mythbusters with Aaron or OCC.

Kristen: "I don't even know why some movies were nominated."

i.e. Vera Drake? I may just be showing my conservative bias, but what is with all of these euthanasia and abortion movies.

(although to confess, I really want to see Million Dollar Baby).

I like watching it for the dresses too. I think Hillary Swank's was ugly, and I think it's so lame when people talk on and on and on like that.

Posted by Kristen at Tue Mar 01 2005 11:46

I know, it was ugly. And she was like I want to save Clint for last, but then she ended up thanking her agent or publicist or something like that which was so tacky. I know most of the awards are favorites. Like the only reason Johnny Depp was nominated for Finding Neverland wasn't because or that performance but rather his past performances and they think he deserves one, and I do too, but for "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" or some other movie. You know if Johnny wasn't in Finding Neverland it would not have even been mentioned at the Oscars.
What about Jim Caviezel's performance in The Passion? I can't really talk much though b/c I haven't seen any of the movies. I don't really even have a desire to see Ray.

Posted by Susie at Tue Mar 01 2005 20:38

Finding Neverland is the only one I want to see (except for The Incredibles and Lemony Snicket, which I have already seen).

Posted by Alyson at Wed Mar 02 2005 11:12

I haven't seen any of them either. Note even Lemony Snicket or The Incredibles. I am so out of it.

Posted by Kristen at Wed Mar 02 2005 14:35

You have to see Incredibles. It is very cute. One of my favorites.

I will. Atticus and Dave went in December on a little "guys night out." I'll see the movie when it comes out on DVD.
