Leonard's board game data experiments

Introduction

In July 2011 I grabbed a lot of information about board games from BoardgameGeek's excellent database, using their simple web service. My original purpose was to create the art project Board Game Dadaist, but as I grew to understand the dataset I found that I had a lot of questions about board games that this data could answer. These pages contain some interesting facts, graphs, and lists I've discovered. I'll be adding to them as I explore different parts of the dataset.

Get the raw data

I'm making available the raw data I'm using to make these graphs. This data dump (16M) contains all the games I found on BoardGameGeek in July 2011, with their descriptions, categorizations, and ratings. The format is one game per line, each game described by a JSON dictionary.

Note that by now this dump is out of date, and it's not my data. It's BGG's data. If you want to play around with historical board game data, you can save both yourself and BGG some aggravation by downloading my data dump instead of extracting the data from BGG's web service like I did. But I don't want it considered any kind of canonical representation of what's on BGG.
