Kanayo was a Japanese student who stayed with us for a month or so on some kind of study-abroad plan. She stayed over Christmas and met the whole family, which evidently made quite an impression. She left us with some Japanese kids' picture books which she'd translated in pen above the original text. A really nice gift and probably the first time I saw Japanese along with its English translation.
