Leonard was hungry and grew tired of it quickly so I only got a quick look. Last visit to the museum we saw the sculpture of Geo. Washington.

Postcard back:

Jean-Antoin Houdon (1741-1828)
Bust of George Washington, ca. 1786
Gift of Anna Bing Arnold
Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Leonard's comments:

Sorry about that, dad.

See also: lacma

Postcard from 1986/05/26

Inscription:

Visited this fabulous place heading to Roswell, NM, after spending several days with Anne & family.

Postcard front:

Postcard back:

THE KNOTTED ROPE, CAVERNS OF SONORA, SONORA, TEXAS. Nature has formed many wonders in the Caverns of Sonora. One to be seen at the lowest point of the tour is this Knotted Rope. Here, deep in a subterranean wonderland, nature has sculptured fantastic, translucent and phosphorescent formations. So profuse are these spectacular formations that portions of the Cavern's walls, ceilings and floor are completely adorned. LOCATED JUST OFF U.S. HIGHWAY 290, at Sonora, Texas.

Leonard's comments:

I like to imagine Carl Sagan reading aloud the copy on the back of this postcard.

See also: texas

Postcard from 1985/01/17

Inscription:

Dear Susanna,
Here I am in Hawaii, land of Pineapples. Here, nature has sculptured in stone all of the delicate beauty and perfect detail of a living butterfly. The caverns are located off I.H. 10 (US 290), 8 miles west of Sonora, Texas.

Leonard's comments:

She always leaves a calling card.

See also: susanna

Postcard from 1986/11/15

Postcard back:

Jupiter and its four planet-size moons, called the Galilean satellites, were photographed in early March 1979 by Voyager 1 and assembled into this collage. They are not to scale, but are in their relative positions. Reddish Io (upper left) is nearest Jupiter; then Europs (center); Ganymeded and Callisto (lower right). Nine other much smaller satellites circle Jupiter, one inside Io's orbit and the others millions of miles from the planet. Not visible is Jupiter's faint ring of particles, seen for the first time by Voyager 1. The Voyager Project is managed for NASA's Office of Space Science by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the California Institute of Technology.

Leonard's comments:

You know I wanted this postcard. I'd just recently seen the mind-blowing poster of Jupiter in my kindergarten classroom.
NASA still does these weird collages and it never looks good. They should take a tip from postcard design, and feature each moon of Jupiter (or whatever) in its own labeled box.

See also: smithsonian

Postcard from 1986/12/10

Inscription:

Dear Susanna,
This is the Flamingo. Three images, taken through ultraviolet, violet and green filters on July 12, 1981, were combined to make this photograph. Several changes are apparent in Saturn's atmosphere since Voyager 1's November 1980 encounter, and the planet's rings have brightened considerably due to the higher sun angle. Voyager 2 was 43 million kilometers (27 million miles) from Saturn when it took this photograph. It was quite cold - the Dodgerwers were ahead after 8 innings 3-1, so we left. They hit 3 homeruns. Dodgers Stadium is surrounded by terraced parking for 16,000 cars, and has 56,000 unobstructed view seats with seven front rows, no posts, and multicolored levels which make it baseballs most beautiful Park. It is the first Stadium privately financed in forty years.
Color Credit Emil Cuhel

Leonard's comments:

I'd like to take this opportunity to clear up some common misconceptions. The name of the park is Dodger Stadium, not "Dodgers Stadium", and the name of the baseball team is the Dodgers, not "the Dodgerwers" or whatever my dad wrote there.
I'd never heard of Yamil Abea before I read this postcard.

See also: la

Postcard from 1983/03/12

Inscription:

I went to the Zoo.
