Here's another way to get science fiction set in the past: write science fiction set in the present, and then don't get it published for a long time.

You could probably even set your science fiction in the future, then wait a really long time and get it published

What about setting your historical fiction in the past, then waiting to publish until after we reach the appropriate period in postapocalyptic reconstruction?
