One thing that definitely needs to be fixed as far as washing machines go is that they need to load from the front and have the controls on the front so that you can use the top as storage (dryer controls need to go on the front too). I don't know if European washing machines do this, but they should, dammit.

My mother, who is not from Europe but who has done laundry there, explains comparative washing machine design. Her explanation sort of makes sense to me; the main thing I didn't understand was how made the washing machine smaller and made it use less water without also reducing the size of the load the machine could handle. It turns out that, well, European washing machines do smaller loads of laundry. But does it save water if you do more loads of fewer clothes each?
