Why does it not feel right to criticize something without offering suggestions for improvement? After all, whether your criticism is valid is irrelevant to whether you personally have a better idea. Working hypothesis: the situation you're criticizing might actually be the optimal situation. If you make a criticism the burden of proof is on you, and this includes not only substantiating the criticism but demonstrating that there is an acceptable response to the criticism. Example: "If we believed the Incompleteness Theorem, we'd have no way of creating a consistent and complete formal system!" Yes, that sucks, but that's the way it is. The criticism is invalid.

http://www.galciv.com/docs/: "Even the most popular leaders in history rarely enjoyed an approval rating greater than 60%. But if that doesn’t console you, you can always take the path of evil and actually build gulags to send the people to learn to more about your greatness. That’ll improve their approval rating or at least what they answer to polls. And isn’t that what really counts?"
