[Comments] (5) Happy Hour: Susie and I watched Tim Burton's rendition of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory last night. Why does Mr. Burton have to take the nicest stories and ruin them with a hodgepodge of Goth darkness and unneeded, unexplained mystery? Needless to say, Susie and I did not enjoy it. If Mr. Depp is serious about winning an Emmy, that one won't help.

I watched it on the plane. I didnt think it was great.

Everyone I know loved it! I didn't think it was that great either. There was only one ugly oompa loompa. I didn't really like him or the songs that much. I did like Johnny Depp in it though for the most part.

To be fair, Roald Dahl is an extremely dark children's author, and the book is a bit creepy, too.

The only Roald Dahl books I've read are The Witches and Matilda and I didn't think they were dark at all! I need to read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory now though. I'm very curious how the two movies could be so different.

I've heard some say that the more resent movie follows the tone of the book more closely, but I haven't read the book, nor do I remember the original movie too well.
