"Substitute 'damn' every time you're inclined to write 'very'; your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be."

At VP Elizabeth Bear suggested writing "fucking" instead, because editors no longer care about "damn"s.

i've taken to saying "biscuit" instead of "fuck" from time to time whenever i feel the urge to splurge a vulgarity.

i think i'm the only one who finds it endearing. but thats ok by me.

you know who could really land a good "fuck!" when the occasion called for it? jason robbins. i only worked next to him a couple of times, but he could *really* land the f-word with felt force. he only said it a couple times, but his language was so spot on that it really had resonance the couple times i heard it. in reference to computer junks obv. (not "fuck you evan!")

what about "you know how?"s

Except that cutting the string ", you know," from this post would result in:

"Blogging Pro Tip: The string "" can almost always be cut.The exception? When giving examples of strings that can be cut."

Which is almost a tautology, but not quite.

That's why I wrote the exception.

yesterday on http://kisrael.com/ I included bit of transcription of the Henry Miller monologue. This exact issue came up, how much leeway is appropriate in cleaning up spoken passages? I used to make a point of being as exact as possible, but I don't think that's the professional way of doing things.

I'm surprised not to hear more about this issue.
