The thing that jumped out at me from this review of early roguelikes XRogue and Advanced Rogue is that XRogue could be the first and only roguelike in which you get to fight trilobites.

I got to look at some trilobites at the UW's natural history museum today! They were really big, really good specimens, and you could see they had EYES. Eyebumps, anyway.

They also had some big-ass marine dino skeletons donated by Nathan Myhrvold, since I guess you can only have so many marine dino skeletons swimming through the upper reaches of your living room so eventually you hand them to a museum to do the same.
