When I was a kid one of my favorite games was Flightmare, a game of airborne combat released in 1984. It was a game full of mysteries, some of which were due to the primitive gameplay--your plane's motion in three dimensions was shown by simultaneously running top-down and side views, each of which had eight separate directional controls. Some of the mysteries I still don't understand, like why it asked you whether you had an RGB or a composite monitor.
But what really got me was the writing, which was full of obscure . Even in the interminable introduction you were provided with gems like "The controls are many, and the survivors few."
