we arrived in Death Valley today and climbed on the Sand Dunes.

Reduced in numbers from thousands to a few hundred by human pressure and competition with the non-native burros, a remnant population of these monarchs of the desert still cling to existence within the remote mountains of Death Valley National Monument.
