News You Can Bruise

My new filtered-through Kris Checkerboard Nightmare is probably the best one you'll get from my tenure as co-author. Caution: contains swearing. Interestingly enough, for once I wrote it without any swearing and Kris made it blue. I mean, he turned Chex into Adam here.

"Hmmm... refreshingly cool!" has been my mental catchphrase for a while now, but for some reason it never turns out to actually be refreshingly cool.

In college, Adam Kaplan and I had this running joke about Brian Kernighan as a sort of freelance Santa Claus. He'd break into your house on Christmas Eve and leave you UNIX source tapes or a Plan 9 installation. If you'd been bad, you'd get lumps of Windows NT.

Anyway, while we were having our little jokes, the real Brian Kernighan was riding high at Lucent, lording it over Kevin and giving interviews to fans. Years later, Adam sends a pointer to me and Kris as a reminder... of what could have been. Ach, it's a sad story, and one told for no apparent reason.

PS: confidential to Adam et al. Is it okay if I link to your Livejournals? You don't really advertise them and I know Kris has his own non-Live journal, but sometimes I'd like to link to something you write and I don't know if that's okay or if you want to keep them semi-private or if you even know I know about them, in which case, oops.

A while ago I said that a good simple name for a weblog would be "x's Wild Weblog". Well, now I present Jughead's Wild Weblog!. I love the un-self-conscious writing style. Reminds me of Adam.

After various tribulations I've finally gotten hold of the pictures that were on my camera. This includes pictures from Adam's wedding as well as the whale watch. The whale watch pictures turned out okay; there are two cool pictures of dolphins swimming near the boat, and several pictures with visible whale (including at least one whale fluke picture), but I couldn't even tell which picture was supposed to be of the humpack breach, and of course I totally botched my chance to get an awesome picture of the basking mola mola (I had the perfect opportunity, but my camera was set to 'review' mode instead of to 'take pictures' mode).

Me glasses are broken. This has got to be some kind of record.

I did not mistreat my glasses in any way. They just broke.

More Newsbruiser work. The only big chunk that still remains undone is the chunk that actually changes the files around. Now I have to take a shower and go work in the lab with Adam.

Today we ran out of plastic wrap. This means that, since the beginning of the school year, my sundry roommates and I have used one hundred square feet of plastic wrap. That is a lot of plastic wrap.

I am sick on account of not cooking my cinnamon rolls enough. It is not good.

Adam has a website now. It is http://fire.csua.ucla.edu/~kaplan/.
