I haven't been writing NYCB entries in real life because I'm at a Canonical training session in London and I've got time to do approximately one non-work thing a day. I usually choose dinner. But I was sublimating some urge because last night I wrote two NYCB entries in my sleep. Here's the one I remember.
* [No comments] It Can't Be!: Kurt Cobain looks so young!

Yeah, dream-self, I checked, and he does. I'm older than Cobain was when he died, and I've barely revitalized rock 'n' roll at all. On the plus side, I managed not to kill myself. If only Cobain were still alive, sober, and washed-up, my age cohort would have less complicated self-esteem issues right about now.

The second weblog entry was about a very interesting family I met in-dream, but since they don't really exist it's better for everyone that I don't remember it.

For probably the third time in my life, my dreams were accompanied by music that turned out, when I woke up, to be memorable and pretty good. This time it was a Sheryl Crow-type song which, though no Jake Berendes West Covina, was not bad at all. In retrospect, I think the song was about the singer's status as a character in my dream. I think that's a good meme-propagation technique if you're a singer-songwriter trying to make it big in my dreams.

Eventually I'll have enough remembered dream-songs that I can do a real analysis of the musical style and see how it differs from my normal style.

I dreamed I was escaping from somewhere with some other people in a miniscule submarine. It was dark and so cramped I couldn't move. It was effectively like dreaming about being asleep. Then it started over again, except the submarine was even smaller. As though I'd beaten the first level of Submarine Escape and there was nothing for it but to repeat the experience on a higher difficulty setting.

(Here's #1)
"Well, if I'm driving to New York I should be able to stop by Massachussets and see Jake. Right? Well, let me check the map. Hm, I don't... seem... to be able to read... a map."

(The map wasn't even right.)

My dreams have voiceovers and cuts, like a movie--at least that's how I interpret the sudden scene changes and voices out of nowhere I experience in dreams. Did the dreams of pre-movie man have these? From what I've read of old recounts of dreams, I would say so: "Then I saw... I heard a voice..." So what were the ancient metaphors for dreams? Just weird stuff happening for no reason?

I dreamed that Dar Williams played a cover of "Beef". I listened to it on tape, and was excited because I would be able to modestly add Dar Williams to the list of covers of my songs. She was having fun, which is the important thing about "Beef"; that Dar Williams the singer have fun singing it.

Last night near the end of my dream, Kim Jong Il showed up, wearing jeans and a plaid button-down shirt, trying to act normal. I'm not sure whether or not my dream generator was trying to be funny, but it was funny. This is not funny, though (in case you were having difficulty determining which aspects of Kim Jong Il are funny).

Boy, when your subconscious pulls out some random bit of your memory to put in your dream, but the bit of memory it gets involves solving a system of linear equations, and your subconscious can't do math worth beans; that's when the in-dream hilarity begins.
